Speak Up
Speak Up is a series to help learners of English develop their speaking and listening skills by using the language to communicate about topics that they want to talk about. There are six titles (Level 1 to Level 6) in the series. The grammar and vocabulary at each level is carefully matched with the needs of the learners, according to their age and ability.
Components
- Student’s book
- Teacher’s book
- Audio CD
Student’s Book
In the student’s books there are 8 lessons. Each lesson has:
- a topic of conversation to stimulate and motivate the learners
- the structures and vocabulary that the learners need to talk about the topic
- listening tasks to help with understanding and practise pronunciation
- speaking tasks to develop accuracy and fluency
The vocabulary builder (at the back of each book) lists all the vocabulary used in each lesson. The learners are then encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning by adding vocabulary that they want to use to the list. For example, in Level 2 there is a list of objects in the bedroom. This is not a definitive list and learners can add to the list the items they have in their own bedrooms. They will then feel motivated to use the words relevant to them.
Teacher’s Book
The teacher’s books provide guidance and support to enable teachers to use the materials in the most effective way. There are detailed notes for each lesson which cover aims and objectives, topics, grammar and vocabulary. There is also a suggested lesson plan. Each lesson begins with a task to introduce language or vocabulary items. There is then a series of linked exercises to help students improve their accuracy, use the appropriate vocabulary for the task and practise pronunciation.
Audio CD
The CD has models of conversations that focus on the topic in each lesson. They are designed to help learners develop their listening skills and practise their pronunciation.
